Market Capitalisation (MCAP)

Market capitalization, or market cap, is a key metric used to evaluate the total value of a cryptocurrency. It is calculated by multiplying the current price of a single unit of the cryptocurrency by the total number of units in circulation. For example, if a cryptocurrency has 10 million units in circulation and each unit is worth $50, the market cap would be $500 million. Market cap is often used to rank cryptocurrencies by their relative size and importance within the market, providing investors with a snapshot of the asset's market value.

Cryptocurrencies with large market caps, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, are generally considered more stable and less prone to extreme volatility. These large-cap cryptocurrencies are often referred to as "blue-chip" assets in the crypto world, analogous to blue-chip stocks in traditional finance. Investors might view large-cap cryptocurrencies as safer investments due to their established presence, higher liquidity, and broader acceptance. However, they also typically offer lower growth potential compared to smaller, emerging cryptocurrencies.
